VERY GOOD CONDITION

This sale is for a vintage hardback edition entitled “The Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides with Samuel Johnson,” by James Boswell (1740-1795) [biographer of Samuel Johnson], with a double-page map of the tour dated 1773 and decorated endpapers.

It was published by J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd., of London, in 1935 and is Number 387 of the wonderful vintage and highly collectable “Everyman’s Library” series, edited by Ernest Rhys.

Doctor Samuel Johnson (1709-1784), was an English lexicographer, essayist, poet and moralist, a major literary figure in the second half of the eighteenth century.

He lived from the time of Queen Anne and into the third decade of the reign of George III.  Johnson had once said (1758) of his own time “the present age - though not likely to shine hereafter among the most splendid periods of history, has yet given examples of charity, which may be very properly commended to imitation.”

The years after Johnson wrote those words saw the year of Minden, of Quiberon Bay, and the taking of Quebec, a series of victories to which there are few parallels.  It was the age of Chatham too, and of Clive of India, Captain Cook, Wolfe, Burke, Fox, Gibbon, Fielding, Reynolds, Gainsborough, Garrick, Cavendish, Priestley, Watt and many more, and is regarded by many as one of the most splendid periods of history.

The book measures 6.75 inches x 4.5 inches and has 361 pages.

The book is in good, neat and clean condition for its age, with wear and tears/loss to the ends of the spine of the original dust-jacket. There are NO inscriptions/book-plates and NO other ink or pencil markings in the book.  The binding is good with no loose or missing pages.

A wonderful vintage edition.

Unwinsbooks have held down shipping prices from 2013-2020 in spite of small increases in postage costs.  However, Royal Mail Prices dramatically changed on 1 July 2020, as a result of exceptional cost increases outside of their control, so we are reluctantly having to pass on pricing increases for parcels being sent overseas (primarily USA, New Zealand, Australia and the Rest of the World).

These costs are a direct result of:

“Royal Mail, always aim to deliver the best value international services. We fully recognise that these changes are significant. This was a decision we reluctantly took but is necessary in view of the increased costs borne by Royal Mail.”

If the Royal Mail reduce their charges in the future (in particular what they term “Temporary Air Carrier Supplement Pricing”) unwinsbooks will reduce the international costs accordingly.

Unwinsbooks always obtain a proof of postage receipt from the Royal Mail.  Packages over Royal Mail size rules may be sent by courier (customer will be informed).
