DESCRIPTION

Important and richly illustrated work on America and the discovery of the New World. It is a compiled excerpt from de Bry's "Great Voyages", from which some of the copper engravings were also taken. Here in second edition. The first part describes the customs and traditions of the Native Americans. The second and third parts describe the voyages of discovery and conquests of the Spanish, English, Dutch and French. The voyages of Christopher Columbus, Francisco Pizzaro, Amerigo Vespucci, Fernando Magellan, Johann Staden von Homburg, René Goulaine de Laudonnière, Johann Ribaldi, Sir Francis, Drake, Oliver von Nord, Robert Harcurts and Willem Cornelisz Schouten, for example, are described in detail, as are the fleet movements of the colonial powers to the New World. The last leaf explaining the naming of America.   

"It contains a resumé of the Histories of Acosta, Oviedo, Peter Martyr, Herrera, Laet, &tc. An account of 33 voyages to America, from Columbus to Spilbergen and Schouten; notices of the expeditions of Lemaire and Peter Heyn, the conquests of Brazil by the Dutch, and descriptions of Greenland and Spitzbergen. The first edition was published in 1631." (Sabin).

This work was long attributed to Johann Philipp Abelin until Gallati proved Gottfried's authorship in 1902. The number of plates varies in the literature. A total of up to eight maps are mentioned here, but most copies, the digital copies but also the copies sold on the market in recent years contain only 5 maps. The present copy contains the maps of America with the subsidiary maps of the Arctic and Antarctic, Virginia, Strait of Magellan with natives, Northern Brazil as well as the views of Olinda and Olinda de Pernambuco on one map.

One engraved allegorical title, five folded or double-page copper maps or views, and 174 half-page copper plates of text.

Original brown leather binding of the time. Spine with rich gilt lettering as well as gilt title labels. Very good condition. Binding professionally restored. Book block and binding firm and stable. Endpapers renewed. Folio: 33 x 22 x 5,5 cm. 

CONDITION

Good and neat condition. Browned throughout, partially more or less spotted and waterstained. Carefully and expertly restored copy. Copper title with closed tears as well as with barely visible supplemented margins and corners. The image losses in the lower right corner retouched. The mostly tattered folding maps in neat, restored condition with closed tears and repaired or backed missing parts. The map of America with larger retouched missing parts. Page 311/312 with backed loss in right margin with some loss of text of marginal comments. Pages 625/626 and 635/636 with closed tear and old backed lower margin.

Bedeutendes und reich illustriertes Werk über Amerika und die Entdeckung der Neuen Welt. Es handelt sich um einen kompilierten Auszug aus de Brys „Großen Reisen“, von denen auch ein Teil der Kupferstiche übernommen wurde. Hier in zweiter Ausgabe. Der erste Teil beschreibt die Sitten und Gebräuche der Ureinwohner Amerikas. Der zweite und dritte Teil beschreibt die Entdeckungsreisen en und Eroberungen der Spanier, Engländer, Holländer und Franzosen. Ausführlich beschrieben werden zum Beispiel die Reisen von Christopher Columbus, Francisco Pizzaro, Amerigo Vespucci, Fernando Magellan, Johann Staden von Homburg, René Goulaine de Laudonnière, Johann Ribaldi, Sir Francis, Drake, Oliver von Nord, Robert Harcurts und Willem Cornelisz Schouten sowie die Flottenbewegungen der Kolonialmächte in die Neue Welt. Das letzte Blatt mit der Erklärung der Namensgebung von Amerika.

Dieses Werk wurde lange Zeit Johann Philipp Abelin zugeschrieben, bis Gallati im Jahr 1902 die Autorschaft Gottfrieds nachwies. Die Angabe der Tafelzahl variiert in der Literatur. Insgesamt werden hier bis zu acht Karten genannt, die meisten Exemplare, die Digitalisate aber auch die am Markt in den letzten Jahren verkauften Exemplare   enthalten jedoch nur 5 Karten. Das vorliegende Exemplar enthält die Karten von Amerika mit den Nebenkarten der Arktis und Antarktis, Virginia, Magellanstraße mit Eingeborenen, Nord-Brasilien sowie die Ansichten von Olinda und Olinda de Pernambuco auf einer Karte.

Ein gestochener allegorischer Titel, fünf gefaltete bzw. doppelblattgroße Kupferkarten bzw. -ansichten sowie 174 halbseitige Textkupfer.

EINBAND

Originaler, brauner Lederband der Zeit. Rücken mit reichhaltigen Goldprägungen sowie goldgeprägten Titelschildern. Sehr guter Zustand. Einband professionell restauriert. Buchblock und Bindung fest und stabil. Vorsätze erneuert. 

Folio: 33 x 22 x 5,5 cm.

Guter und ordentlicher Zustand. Durchgehend gebräunt, partiell mehr oder weniger fleckig und wasserrandig. Sorgfältig und fachmännisch restauriertes Exemplar. Kupfertitel mit geschlossenen Rissen sowie mit kaum sichtbar ergänzten Rändern und Ecken. Die Bildverluste in der unteren rechten Ecke retuschiert. Die meist zerfledderten Faltkarten in ordentlichem, restauriertem Zustand mit geschlossenen Rissen und reparierten bzw. hinterlegten Fehlstellen. Die Amerikakarte mit größeren retuschierten Fehlstellen. Seite 311/312 mit hinterlegter Fehlstelle im rechten Rand mit etwas Textverlust der Randkommentare. Seite 625/626 sowie 635/636 mit geschlossenem Einriss und alt hinterlegtem unteren Rand.
