Introduced in 2021 the U.S. Mint’s Armed Forces Silver Medals Program honors the six branches of the U.S. military: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy, and Space Force. Each military branch has a proud history & unique traditions in their service to our country. These medals are representative of the branch as a whole, not a specific unit, battle or action and the designs found on the new medals are emblematic of the history & individual missions of each branch of our military.

The U.S. Coast Guard was established in 1790, as the nation's branch of the Armed Forces focused on maritime security, search and rescue, & law enforcement. This medal represents the second 1oz release of the U.S. Mint's U.S. Armed Forces Silver Medal series.

The obverse design created by Richard Masters and sculpted by Michael Gaudioso shows a Coast Guard national security cutter at full throttle, speeding head-on toward the viewer. The inscriptions "U.S. COAST GUARD," and the Coast Guard motto "SEMPER PARATUS," (always ready) wrap around the upper border. The hull number identifies the cutter Hamilton, named for Alexander Hamilton.

The reverse which was designed by Artistic Infusion Program artist Thomas Hipschen & engraved by Medallic Artist Renata Gordon features a life preserver ring & the racing stripe mark, two iconic symbols of the Coast Guard which are found on almost all Coast Guard craft. The racing stripes are depicted with a heraldic hatching tradition to indicate color, with horizontal lines indicating the color blue & vertical lines indicating red. The Coast Guard emblem, which is part of the racing stripe mark, is also in the center. Inscribed into the life preserver ring are the Coast Guard’s core values “HONOR,” “RESPECT,” & “DEVOTION TO DUTY.”

This 2022 U.S. Armed Forces Coast Guard Medal was struck by the United States Mint. Each medal weighs 1oz and is struck with a matte finish from .999 Fine Silver. This medal has been certified MS70 First Day of Issue by NGC!! In addition, the label has been hand signed by the sculptor of the obverse Michael Gaudioso for the NGC exclusive U.S. Mint Engraver Series!!
