This sale is for a
large size hardback FIRST EDITION entitled “The Satyr,” subtitled “An Account of the Life and Work, Death
and Salvation of John Wilmot, Second Earl of Rochester,” by Cephas Goldsworthy.
It was published
by Weidenfeld & Nicolson, of London, and is the 2001 FIRST EDITION (stated).
When Charles II
returned to England in 1660, young John Wilmot, 2nd
Earl of Rochester (1647-1680) had
not long been at Wadham College, Oxford.
Charles’ restoration inspired celebrations in the college that were so
riotous that Rochester broke off his studies.
He wrote a ponderous poem in praise of the new king that brought him an
annual pension of £500 and from then on devoted himself to debauchery.
In the short time
that comprised the rest of his life – Rochester was only 33 when he died of
tertiary syphilis – he loved both sexes wildly and indiscriminately; was
confined to the tower for kidnapping an heiress; was released to fight a war
against the Dutch; married and fathered children from his wife and his
mistress; advanced the claims of Nell Gwyn; was banished repeatedly from court
for a multitude of misdemeanours; suffered the agonies of thrice being ‘cured’
of syphilis; and then returned, on his death bed, to the Protestant church.
Voltaire would
describe him later as ‘a man of genius, and a great poet’.
His best-known
work was A Satyr Against Reason and Mankind which is included, with
annotations by the author, on pages 6 to 10.
The book measures 9.5
inches x 6.5 inches x 1.25 inches and has 295 pages.
The book is in
good, neat condition for its age, with a similarly very good original
dust-jacket (not even price-clipped – it cost £25.00 at the time!) There are NO
inscriptions/book-plates and NO other ink or pencil markings in the book. The binding is good with no loose or missing
pages.
A wonderful FIRST
EDITION.

Unwinsbooks have held down shipping prices
from 2013-2020 in spite of small increases in postage costs. However, Royal Mail Prices dramatically
changed on 1 July 2020, as a result of exceptional cost increases outside of their
control, so we are reluctantly having to pass on pricing increases for parcels
being sent overseas (primarily USA, New Zealand, Australia and the Rest of the
World).
These costs are a direct result of:
“Royal Mail, always aim to deliver the best
value international services. We fully recognise that these changes are significant.
This was a decision we reluctantly took but is necessary in view of the
increased costs borne by Royal Mail.”
If the Royal Mail reduce their charges in
the future (in particular what they term “Temporary Air Carrier Supplement
Pricing”) unwinsbooks will reduce the international costs accordingly.
Unwinsbooks always
obtain a proof of postage receipt from the Royal Mail. Packages over Royal Mail size rules may be sent
by courier (customer will be informed).
Goods will be WELL PACKAGED by Unwins Books
