ARTIST: Johannes Meyer Andersen is a well-listed Danish artist, whose works have been offered at auctions multiple times and who has had works exhibited all around the world, including Miami, Florida, New York and Solvang, California. He was born in Skovshoved, Zealand and found many of his first motifs around the fishing community in this area. In 1970 he moved to Skagen and found great inspiration in the special light and characteristic yellow houses of this area. Another favorite motif of his is horses and he was quite a specialist in painting them. Thus, he got the nickname “horse painter”. He also went on several educational trips to Italy, Paris, England, Sweden and Norway.

PAINTING: Oil on canvas. The painting is a beautiful rendering of a man harvesting using a reaper binder. The first reaper binders came to Denmark in the late 19th century and from 1900-1930 became popular and widespread. From around 1950, farmers started using tractors instead of horses to pull them. The painting has brilliant lighting and as is usual with this artist, the horses are very detailed and excellently depicted. Based on the canvas and frame, I’ll date the painting to somewhere between 1950-1980. Signed:”Johs.Meyer.A” in the lower right corner.
