Aviation art original drawing (not a print) of 4th Fighter Group (8th Air Force) P-47 Thunderbolt, by Wade Meyers.

The drawing has been lightly sprayed with an archival fixative. Still, I recommend not touching the artwork image area and framing the piece as soon as possible.

“The Beev” 7 x 18 in. (art image size). Graphite & charcoal on toned paper.

4th Fighter Group pilot 2Lt. Jack Raphael in his P-47C, nicknamed Eager Beaver, circa late 1943. Jack flew Thunderbolts and Mustangs with the group at Debden, Essex, from August 1943 to June 1944. He was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal (3 OLC), and several other decorations for his WWII combat service.

A prolific shutterbug and daily diarist while not flying combat missions, Jack spent many hours in the base photo lab processing his own photographs and gathering copies of the official photos the lab printed for group members to send home.

Jack’s son Dave, a retired USAF Chief Master Sergeant, was an early and strong supporter and collector of my art and made his father’s collection available to me to reference. While painting Eagles of Thunder years ago my easel was literally surrounded by Jack’s memorabilia. The Muses were happy.

In memory of Jack and Dave Raphael.
