USS Northampton was a purpose-built command-ship, built on a cruiser hull in Quincy, MA and commissioned in 1953. She was the command ship for the Atlantic fleet and also for the Amphibious Force. Finally, she was decommissioned in 1970, struck from the Navy list in 1977.
