...SE Detroit MI and Lucknow ONTARIO. RPPC 1910...MEN, WOMEN, GIRLS AND BOYS, PIPE & DRUM MUSICIANS, HIGHLAND CADETS...St. Andrews Lucknow-Huron-Bruce Pipe & Drum Old Boys and Girls Band were taken by PESHA COMPETITOR Canadian Photographer G.A. HADDEN...

The image was taken at a "Re-Union" in Lucknow, ONT, by the talented Canadian photographer G.A. Hadden, of Alvinston, Ontario. Photograph of the Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario, Canada Scottish Pipe, and Drum Band, also called the International Pipe Band and the St. Andrews Highland Cadets of Detroit, Mich.

Theme: Scottish Pipe & Drum Band (Bagpipes and Drums, Bagpipers, snare, and tenor drums) vs. Fife and Drum Corps. Pipe Majors. Bands are often made up of Great Highland bagpipes, a section of snare drummers (often referred to as 'side drummers'), several tenor drummers, and usually one, though occasionally two, bass drummers.

Additional Information: The Detroit Band was headquartered at historic St. Andrews Hall back in the day when it was still called "St. Andrew's Parlor." The 1910 event documented here was Lucknow=Huron=Bruce Old Boys and Girls Reunion, but the large group of bagpipers and drum players were men and women of all ages, and young musicians were called young cadets.

While trying to find out more about the band, I researched the photographer Hadden, which turned into an exciting story of competing photographers. The competition between photographers was so fierce that at one point in Southern Ontario, there was a tremendous amount of "bad blood" between photographers. It got so bad between Hadden, Louis Pesha, and other competitors as well that Pesha, a Canadian, moved to Marine City, MI! The feuding was all based on Pesha's pricing. Hadden and other Canadian photographers felt that Pesha's low pricing was undercutting them, and his pricing was messing up the market for all other Photographers. This friction caused Pesha to move to Michigan after receiving a threatening letter that stated, "We, the people of surrounding towns not more than 99 miles from Alvinston," read an anonymous letter published in the Alvinston Free Press, "take this opportunity of warning you of your danger if you continue to make those cheap 98 cent photos."...
