PT-109 was built by Elco in New Jersey and launched on 20 June 1943 . This 80 foot motor torpedo boat was place in service in 1942 and operated out of Rendova Island in the Solomons during the WW II. Her commander LTJG John F. Kennedy had been trained aboard PT boats stateside. The vessel fought enemy armored barges and destroyers at night. Her three 12 cylinder aviation fuel guzzling engines powered her up to 41 knots.

On 2 August 1943 she was cut in half at night by an enemy destroyer. Lt. Kennedy was able to rescue the survivors and this proved helpful in his later political career. However, his back was injured and he experienced pain for most of his life. (see extensive web references for more information)
