This delighfully bold and stylized depiction of folk hero Paul Bunyan and his companion Babe the blue ox is carved from a single chunk of pine with original paint and measures 6 3/4" x 7 1/2" x 3 3/4" overall.  As the images show, the figure is very originally conceived, standing with one leg atop a log, Babe at his back and a single tiny (normal size?) creature perced on his shoulder as his silver-headed axe dangles between his legs. Intriguing viewed from all angles the work is is in good condition with no cracks or significant loss.  The underside bears a collector's inscription attributing it t Michigan folk sculpture Lavere Mason (1930-1965) an accomplished self-taught folk sculptor whose works date from the middle years of the 1900's.
