This fighting vessel fought in WW II in the Pacific Theater. The 311 foot Gato Class diesel submarine was built at Mare Island and commissioned 31 Jan 1942. She was ordered to the South Pacific in the early fighting period. She sank 18 hostile vessels during her seven patrols. During her fourth patrol this brave fighting submarine sank when attacked by three enemy ships on 28 March 1945. She was awarded 11 WW II Battle Stars and a Presidential Unit Citation.
