Within the Sapindaceae family is the balloon vine. Native to the tropics of Africa, Asia, and Australia, this plant thrives in damp environments including swamps, grasslands, savannas, and riverbanks. The leaves have a long history of use in Nigeria for treating coughs, colds, and malaria.

From the Greek word for heart seed came the name Cardiospermum. In this case, the fruit's resemblance to a human heart's form is being discussed.

With a tiny cream-colored heart-shaped seed in the middle, the black seeds are particularly distinctive.

Beautiful blossoms are produced by this vine, which is simple to grow. One of the most invasive species in Australia, however, it spreads like wildfire and takes over gardens if not controlled.

Uses of the Leaves


The fruit of the Cardiospermum halicacabum is used as a laxative. Useful for relieving constipation. Effective against a variety of venomous creatures, including rats and spiders.  Used for relieving aches and pains in the joints. Utilized in the treatment of skin disorders

It also has anti-inflammatory properties, thus it could be used to ease arthritis discomfort. The plant's anti-inflammatory properties make it a promising candidate for treating inflammatory bowel disease.

It has been observed that C. halicacabum extract made from the plant's aerial parts can slow the progression of cancer cells.

An infusion or decoction made from the leaves of this plant is used to treat a wide variety of gastrointestinal and sexually transmitted disorders.

Boils, abscesses, wounds, ulcers, burns, insect bites, snake bites, and scorpion stings can all be treated topically with a poultice made from the plant's roots.

As a laxative, you can use the plant's seeds.

Tea made from the plant's bark is used to alleviate symptoms of fever, headache, toothache, and rheumatic pain. Ringworm, athlete's foot, and jock itch are all cured by using a topical juice made from this plant's leaves.

Coughs, colds, bronchial problems, and even whooping cough can all be alleviated by using the plant's root. Conjunctivitis can be treated by using an eye wash made from the plant's sap. The plant's stem is applied topically to heal minor wounds, sprains, edema, and warts. People with oral ulcers chew the plant's leaves for relief.

The edible and medicinal seeds of the plant known as Cardiospermum halicacabum. Perfumes and cosmetics benefit from their essential oils, which they contain.
