Here we have a small and attractive "Urgent" cover from Glendale CA to England with an auxiliary handstamp stating "By Air in USA & in Europe." It has a distinctive arrow-shaped sticker stating: "This Letter Sent By Airmail / For Speed Reply by Air Mail." It has some wear from international postal handling and a bit roughly opened at the right. The reverse has an area of gum toning.

The 6-cent eagle airmail and 5-cent Virginia Dare stamp (the latter for the sea crossing) are tied by a neat and full Glendale Calif. machine cancel of Jun 7 1938. Total postage paid is 11 cents. A Glendale single ring handstamp, part of a duplex postmark, is of the same date and time.

The address of the sender, Daphne de Lacey, North Belmont Street, Glendale, is written neatly on the flap. The cover is address to EJ Biggs, "Greengates," Barnett Wood Lane, Ashtead, Surrey, England.

A fine and neat example of a late air-surface transatlantic service.

The postage on this lot is higher than I would like, which is down to Royal Mail rates and other charges beyond my control such as eBay and PayPal commissions. I use good British stamps to send all my lots and these should result in collectable stamps cancelled by hand in my village post office for the buyer.

As I have some buy-it-now lots, anyone who makes a purchase might want to look at them before paying. If you buy more than one item, please wait for my invoice so I can combine postage

When payment is received by teatime British time (it is usually dished up about 4:30) I normally post the item the next morning. Our village post office is closed on Saturdays, however, so if you pay on Friday the item will not go out until the following Monday.
