This nice set of tongs could have been used to carry blocks of ice before refrigeration was available on the farm homestead . Ice peddlers would make the rounds to the “out of the way” homesteads to sell them ice to put in their wooden ice box to keep milk and butter cool .

The tongs could also be used to carry a large “stick”of firewood with one hand instead of hugging it up against them .

The tongs will open up to carry a 12 inch piece of ice or stick of wood , of which I have had my share of carrying when growing up on the farm !!
