REVIEW
Giuseppe Verdi's spectacular opera Aida is set in Egypt and was commissioned for 150,000 francs by Isma il Pasha, Khedive of Egypt, to celebrate the opening of Cairo's Khedivial Opera House. The premiere was delayed though because of the Siege of Paris (1870 71), during the Franco-Prussian War, when the scenery and costumes were stuck in the French capital, and Verdi's Rigoletto was performed instead. Aida eventually premiered in Cairo on Christmas Eve in 1871, with Giovanni Bottesini conducting after Verdi withdrew. Today the opera is an established favourite with many performances around the world each year. New York's Metropolitan Opera alone has seen Aida sung more than 1,100 times since 1886. The Italian libretto by Antonio Ghislanzonischeme follows a scenario often attributed to the French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette, but Verdi biographer Mary Jane Phillips-Matz argues that the source is actually Temistocle Solera. This new production is an event barely to be surpassed, especially when played before La Scala's notoriously critical audience. Legendary stage director Peter Stein succeeds in delivering a lucid, uncluttered and elegant production acclaimed in equal measure by the press and public. The Choir and Orchestra of the Teatro alla Scala are conducted with authority by Verdi specialist Zubin Mehta and the outstanding soloists include Carlo Colombara as the King, young mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili as the fiery Amneris, Kristin Lewis as an irresistible Aida, the wonderful Fabio Sartori Radamès, Finnish bass Matti Salminen as the High Priest, George Gagnidze as Aida's father Amonasro and Chiara Isotton. A perfect coup de théâtre. - Giornale della musica. --New Classics, Aug'16
