The work is based on a copy letter-book kept by Stanley and containing his letters of 1881-82 to Leopold II and others. Maurice uses this document, which he found, as the focal point of a general study covering 1876-1885. The letter-book contained 80 letters, of which 16 are published in their entirety, 27 in extract form, and the remainder only listed. An important source on Stanley's years in the Congo.
