Wat
Arun is an ancient temple built in the Ayutthaya period. It was named Wat Chaeng
because King Tak finished the battle and returned with his army in the morning. It is said that it was
originally called the Olive Temple and later became the Olive Nok Temple. Because another temple had
been built in the same district. But it's in the Bangkok Yai canal. The villagers called the new
temple Wat Makok Nai (Wat
Nuan Noradit) and
then called Wat Makok Nai, which is at the mouth of the Bangkok Yai Canal, Wat
Makok Nok. As
for the reason the name was changed to Wat Chaeng, it is believed that when
King Thonburi established the capital. In Thonburi in 1767, he arrived in
front of this temple at dawn. Therefore, the new name was given to Wat Chaeng.
When
His Majesty King Thonburi ordered Let the palace be built. He took the Wichai Prasit
Fortress on the west side to house the palace. Then expanded the royal grounds
until Wat Chaeng became a temple within the palace. Like Wat Phra Si Sanphet in
the Ayutthaya period. and
is the location of the Phra Phuttha Maha Mani Rattana Sculpture brought from
Vientiane in 1778 before being moved to be
enshrined at Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram in 1784.
