GOOD CONDITION

This sale is for a vintage edition entitled “The Spanish Farm,” by R. H. Mottram, with a Preface by John Galsworthy and a frontispiece portrait of the author.

It was published by Penguin Books, of Harmondsworth, Middlesex, in 1941.

The Spanish Farm was awarded the Hawthornden Prize in 1924 and is a World War 1, fictional wartime autobiography by Ralph Hale Mottram (1883-1971) on the British Army at War in France and Belgium during the First World War.

Part fiction, part chronicle, it is a very interesting book that never loses sight of Madeleine's home, that solid old farmstead of French Flanders, named in the Spanish wars of centuries ago, and still standing after the greatest war of all time.

This book was complete in itself, but became the first part of the Spanish Farm trilogy.  The other two parts of the trilogy were entitled Sixty-Four, Ninety-Four! and The Crime at Vanderlynden’s.

The contents include:

·       Preface by John Galsworthy

·       La Patrie Est En Danger

·       “On Les Aura”

·       La Gallette

The book measures 7 inches x 4.25 inches and has 128 pages.

The book is in good used but generally neat condition for a softback of its age, with a previous owner’s name/signature and vintage bookshop stamp at the front and foxing to and near the rear cover, with no other ink or pencil markings in the book (old price sticker residue on the front cover).  The binding is good, save there is no blank rear endpaper, with no other loose or missing pages.

A good reading copy of this vintage edition.

Unwinsbooks have held down shipping prices from 2013-2020 in spite of small increases in postage costs.  However, Royal Mail Prices dramatically changed on 1 July 2020, as a result of exceptional cost increases outside of their control, so we are reluctantly having to pass on pricing increases for parcels being sent overseas (primarily USA, New Zealand, Australia and the Rest of the World).

These costs are a direct result of:

“Royal Mail, always aim to deliver the best value international services. We fully recognise that these changes are significant. This was a decision we reluctantly took but is necessary in view of the increased costs borne by Royal Mail.”

If the Royal Mail reduce their charges in the future (in particular what they term “Temporary Air Carrier Supplement Pricing”) unwinsbooks will reduce the international costs accordingly.

Unwinsbooks always obtain a proof of postage receipt from the Royal Mail.  Packages over Royal Mail size rules may be sent by courier (customer will be informed).

Goods will be WELL PACKAGED by Unwins Books and dispatched once payment has cleared.
