Yesterday Today Tomorrow Semi Tropical New Cuttings Purple White Lav Shrub Plant

Description
Yesterday today tomorrow plant Brunfelsia pauciflora may have one of the longest plant names and the name is fitting for a reason. The flowers change their color from one day to the next starting purple turning lavender and finally turning white as they mature. In addition these tropical evergreen shrubs have long persistent blooms. After the first heavy bloom in spring it will produce more of its showy fragrant flowers in fall or any time of the year if it likes its location. Its flowers release their fragrance at night which ranges from heady musk to spicy cloves. Its basic care requirements are simple. It grows in acidic soil needs regular fertilization and prefers moist soil. It likes tropical warm environments with humidity and prefers filtered light but can tolerate full sun.

Lighting
In its natural habitat yesterday today tomorrow grows in semi shaded light forests and thickets protected from the scorching sun. An excellent place to plant Brunfelsia is under a canopy of tall conifers which allow enough room for it to reach its mature height.

The Soil
The soil should be moist acidic and fertile with a high amount of organic matter and good drainage.

Of Water
Whether you grow Braunfelsia outdoors or in containers the soil should be constantly moist but never soggy. Water as needed and do not allow the soil to dry out. Potted plants need to be checked daily especially in summer. In winter indoor plants will be dormant and water less so you should reduce watering accordingly.

Temperature And Humidity
Because Brunfelsia is a tropical plant it thrives in humid environments.

Fertilizer
Before adding fertilizer to outdoor brunfelsia check the pH of the soil around the plant. If your soil is not acidic enough apply a liquid fertilizer for acid loving plants but use about half the strength indicated on the fertilizer label  every two weeks. If the soil is below the correct pH of 6 adding an acidic mulch such as peat moss or pine needles will benefit the plant. This helps prevent yellowing of the leaves. Container plants have higher fertilizer needs so feed them every two weeks during the growing season stop fertilizing in winter and start again in early spring.

Pruning
Brunfelsia is slow growing and pruning is not essential. However to encourage bushy growth and give the mounded bush a tidy appearance remove all spent flowers and give the plant overall light after spring bloom. When growing in containers pruning is very important to manage the plant. Wait until it blooms then cut all the stems in half.

Propagation By Cuttings.
For pruning you will need sterilized pruning shears a small clean pot of fresh moist potting soil a clear plastic bag a long pencil or chopstick and rooting hormone optional. Remove all but the top two leaves by cutting the stem. If using rooting hormone place the cut end in the hormone. Plant the cut end into the soil at least three inches deep. The plastic bag acts as a greenhouse for the cut covering the cut but the chopstick or pencil is used as a stand to prop up the bag so it won t rest against the cut. Place the plant in a warm spot that receives filtered light. The plant should develop roots within four to six weeks. Check for rooting by gently pulling on the cutting. If you get resistance roots form. Remove the bag.
