Description

Handsome original, limited edition lithograph titled, “And God Created the Greater Light” from the Genesis Portfolio, 1924 by Abel Pann (1883-1963).  Presented in its original frame, the image area showing measures 11 7/8 x 8 1/2 inches. The paper size is unknown as it has not been examined outside of its frame which measures 24 1/4 x 21 inches to the outside edges.  The print is signed in pencil twice by the artist including once in Hebrew and is numbered in pencil as 7/30.  The litho was acquired in the 1960’s in New York City and has been in the same family since then.  The print appears to be in excellent condition.

Abel Pann was born in Latvia and learned the printing trade early there while working in a printing house before attending the Odessa Academy of Fine Arts in the Ukraine.  He moved to Paris in 1903 to study at the Julia Academy of Art later immigrating to Israel to teach at Bezalel School of Art.  He is credited for bringing the first professional lithographic printing press to Israel opening a workshop in 1921.  His works can be found in the collections of The Art Institute of Chicago, Centre Pompidou, The Haag Museum, Hofstra University Museum, The British Museum, Tel Aviv Museum of Art and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem among others.
