Hasegawa 1/72 US Navy/Marine Corps Carrier-based Fighter F-8E From Japan Stocked

Description

The F-8 Crusader is the U.S. Navy's first full-scale practical supersonic fighter.
In September 1951, the U.S. Navy presented a request for proposals for a supersonic ship-based fighter to various aircraft manufacturers.
At the time, breaking the speed of sound was still technically in the research stage, but on June 29, 1952, the U.S. Navy approved Chance Boat Company's proposal.
The first aircraft was designated XF8U-1, and made its first successful flight on March 25, 1955. This flight broke the speed of sound, creating the first ever sonic shipboard fighter.
Development proceeded smoothly, and on March 25, 1957, the first combat unit, the VF-32, equipped with the mass-produced F8U-1, was formed at an unusually early date.

The F-8 was a single-engine, single-seat supersonic fighter with a slender fuselage, wings with a 42° retract angle, and a low horizontal tail wing.
The air intake is pitot type with an opening on the underside of the nose.
The F-8 can be broadly classified into a fighter and a reconnaissance type, but the F-8E model has all-weather capability, and a new pylon on the underside of the wing allows it to carry up to 4,000 pounds of external equipment, making it more powerful in ground attacks.

During the Vietnam War, the F-8E was deployed not only as a fighter but also for anti-aircraft fire suppression and by the Marines, and served as the mainstay model of the U.S. carrier task force.
