Hoya is one of Japan's top optical manufacturers, and this is a really nice 300mm telephoto lens suitable for Canon FD and FL manual focus SLR cameras in all exposure and metering modes. FD-mount lenses don't fit EOS SLR cameras, but they can be adapted to EOS M or R series and many other mirrorless digital models. This lens is very nicely made, compact and lightweight with multicoated glass and a sliding lens hood, in very good condition and fully working order, supplied with case and caps. 300mm is longer than many zooms go to, provides 6x magnification compared to a 50mm standard lens, and is the longest focal length that many people are comfortable hand holding without a tripod. It's a great focal length for wildlife, sports, candids and many other subjects where you can't get close enough. The diagonal angle of view is around 18 degrees on film cameras.

Canon FD fit lenses can be used on the Canon EOS M or R, Fujifilm X, Olympus Pen and OM-D, Panasonic Lumix G and other Micro Four Thirds, Panasonic S, Nikon Z, Samsung NX and Sony E-mount mirrorless digital cameras with suitable adapters (not included). They work with manual focusing (using live view on the camera's EVF and/or LCD), and manual diaphragm, in metered manual or aperture priority auto exposure modes. The effective focal lengths are increased because of the smaller sensors on many models, which gives this lens a field of view equivalent to approximately 480mm (Canon APS-C), (other APS-C) and 600mm (MFT). Full frame coverage on 24x36mm cameras. Cameras with IBIS (In-Body Image Stabilisation) can reduce the chance of camera shake, with the focal length set manually.

The lens offers automatic diaphragm and full aperture metering on all Canon FD cameras (see below), compatible with all exposure modes including program where available. It's also compatible with all Canon FL cameras with auto diaphragm and stopped down metering where available. The maximum aperture is f/5.6 closing down to f/22 in full stops for maximum depth of field, plus the green circle (auto) setting. It has close focusing down to less than 4.5m (15ft), with distances clearly marked in feet and meters, plus a depth of field scale and infrared index. There's a very large focusing ring with rubber grip for secure handling.

Multicoated (MC) glass for reduced flare and light loss with increased contrast and colour fidelity, plus there's also a built-in sliding lens hood to reduce the chance of flare even further. The filter thread is a standard 58mm, and this doesn't rotate when focusing, which makes this lens much easier to use with polarizing, graduated or square filter systems and other accessories.

This Hoya HMC lens is very well constructed (in Japan, by Tokina), with a solid, metal barrel and lens mount, clear markings and a high standard of fit and finish. The finish is a smart anodised black aluminium with matt chrome coloured aperture ring. It's quite compact at around 155mm (6.1") long on the camera at infinity, less than 70mm (2.8") in diameter and weighs only around 625g (22oz) without accessories. The auto rotating breech lock mounting system is one of the most reliable available, and is largely free from the effects of wear as the mating surfaces don't move in relation to each other. It was used on Canon FL, early FD and independent FD/FL lenses.

An excellent 300mm lens for Canon manual focus users, and adaptable to many modern digital cameras.

Compatibility

This lens fits all Canon FD manual focus 35mm film SLR cameras including the F-1, F-1n, F-1N, FTb, FTbN, EF, TLb, TX, A-1, AE-1, AE-1 Program, AL-1, AT-1, AV-1, T50, T60, T70, T80 (manual focus only) and T90. Automatic diaphragm and full aperture metering, compatible with all exposure modes including aperture priority, shutter priority, program and manual modes on appropriate models. It works with all metering modes including spot on suitable cameras. FD lenses also fit the earlier FL camera models including the FT, FP, FX, TL and Pellix, with stopped down metering where appropriate.

Adaptable to EOS cameras
FD lenses and accessories do not directly fit autofocus EOS film or digital cameras, the EF-M, Canonex, EX-EE or EX-Auto, Demi C, rangefinders, other Canon cameras or any other makes. Adapters are available (not included) for use on EOS SLR cameras with manual focusing and diaphragm operation, using stopped down metering in manual and aperture priority auto exposure modes on most models. Adapters with optical elements are required for focusing to infinity, while non-optical adapters work for close ups only and won't focus to infinity.

Adaptable to mirrorless digital cameras
Adapters are available (not included) to use FD lenses on the Canon EOS M and R, Fujifilm X, Leica CL (2017), M (live view), T, TL and SL, Nikon Z, Olympus Pen and OM-D, Panasonic Lumix G, GH, GF, GM and GX Micro Four Thirds, Panasonic S, Pentax Q, Ricoh GXR Mount A12, Samsung NX, Sigma fp, Sony NEX and E-Mount digital cameras. The combinations usually work with manual focusing to infinity via the EVF or LCD, using manual diaphragm in manual and aperture priority auto exposure modes only, with stopped down metering.
