AIRCRAFT OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE SINCE 1918 OWEN THETFORD GUILD PUBLISHING 1988 22 x 14 cm. 685 pp. HB/DJ Since its first appearance in 1957, Aircraft of the Royal Air Force has been through seven editions and has been accepted worldwide as the standard work of reference on its subject. However, this new and expanded Eighth Edition is the most thorough revision so far undertaken. Naturally, all new aircraft have been added (treated in the traditional way with technical data, operational history, photographic illustrations and line drawings), including the Tornado F.3, Harrier GR.5, Tucano T.I, Chinook, BAe 146, BAe 125, Tristar KG. 1, VC10 Tanker, Phantom F.3, Hercules C.3, Hawk T. 1A, Nimrod MR.2P and the AWACS Boeing E-3 Sentry. These new entries have 70 completely new photographs and 12 three-view drawings specially commissioned from the well-known aviation draughtsman John Sizer. The rest of the contents has also been thoroughly overhauled, updated and more logically organised, incorporating all important events to have occurred since the last edition in 1979, and verifying, expanding and rewriting many other sections in the light of the latest research. Nearly a fifth of this edition is either new or extensively revised in this manner, and expanded appendices include the latest R.A.F. Order of Battle, the new weapons employed by the service, and former R.F.C. types employed on Home Defence in mid to late 1918 - even naval training aircraft used by the R. A.F. High Speed Flight in the Schneider Trophy years are covered. Fittingly, this the most comprehensive edition so far of Thetford's great work, has been published to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the Royal Air Force.
