DESCRIPTION:

This brass traveling quill pen holder (divit) with attached inkwell (qalamdan) is likely from the period of the Ottoman Empire. This handmade, but practical item – often tucked into a hanging belt – was used by traders and government officials to record business transactions and official and legal proceedings while they roamed the empire. It has a scallop shell closure for the ink compartment and what appears to be Arabic character engravings on one side and symmetrical Islamic art designs on the other. The quill pen is included and ink-free. Measures 9” long x 1 ¾” wide. Local pick-ups are okay.
