US Navy Fighting Squadron VF-161, also known as the "Chargers," was a fighter squadron that served in the Vietnam War. The squadron was established in 1943 and flew a variety of different aircraft over the course of its history, including the F-8 Crusader and the F-4 Phantom II.

During the Vietnam War, VF-161 was deployed to the Western Pacific and operated from the aircraft carriers USS Midway and USS Coral Sea. The squadron flew combat missions over North Vietnam and provided air support for ground troops, as well as conducting air-to-air combat against North Vietnamese aircraft.

One of VF-161's most notable engagements during the war was the "MiG Sweep" on April 9, 1972. The squadron, along with other US Navy and US Air Force units, launched a massive strike against North Vietnamese airfields and infrastructure. During the mission, VF-161 shot down four North Vietnamese MiG-21 fighters, making it one of the most successful air-to-air engagements of the war.

VF-161 also provided air support for the US Marines during the Battle of Khe Sanh in early 1968. The squadron's F-8 Crusaders and F-4 Phantom IIs flew hundreds of sorties in support of the Marines, providing critical air cover and ground attack capabilities.
