1901 Pan-American Exposition Pink Opal
Miniature Oil Lamp w/Elegant H.P. Expo Logo
Scarce 1901
Pan-American Exposition Opal Miniature Oil Lamp with Rapheal Beck’s popular Western
Hemisphere Map Logo hand-painted on both the ball font and shade with 2 Young Ladies
superimposed onto each continent. Around
the logo is a transfer print of the superb event, "PAN - AMERICAN
EXPOSITION 1901, BUFFALO, N.Y. U.S.A.", with a mottled pink background
surrounding the rest of the shade & font.
The lamp can be parallelled Frank & Ruth Smith’s first book of
Miniature Lamps on p. 142, fig. 309.
Beck’s art nouveau
design portrays North and South America as two young women whose flowing robes
form the shapes of their respective continents and whose clasped hands over
Central America signify their cultural and economic ties. Beck’s
design was selected by the Pan-American Exposition Company from among some four
hundred competition entries. Her entry
was titled, ‘North and South America Join Hands’. Not many realize that the logos were all
hand-painted on the fonts & shades by a sizable group of young artisans in
Buffalo – and you’ll find there are no two exactly alike from font to shade and
lamp to lamp.
The antique lamp has 4” diameter ball
shade & font. It measures 8-1/2"
H to top of shade, 4 1/4" H to top of collar with a 2 1/2" D base. The lamp is fitted with its original collar,
Plume & Atwood Acorn burner, and chimney. The Font is undamaged with a
working acorn burner - the collar is cracked but is still cemented firmly in
place (see pics). The Shade has a few
fleabites around the top, but overall in great shape. Its Overall Condition, commensurate with age
of 123 years, is VG+.

About Me: I
previously owned & operated a beautiful antique shop that specialized in
antique/vintage estate jewelry, quality lamps & lighting, along with a
variety of other unique, high-quality antiques from the late 1800's thru the
1950's. Items offered here are either
from my former shop, or from my personal collection. I am also a charter member of eBay (when eBay
was formerly known as AuctionWeb), being an avid buyer and seller of quality
antiques since 1997. Starting to
downsize with hopes of moving soon; and my hubby says it can’t all come with
us! So, here's your chance to get this
item at a great price!
