Travel to the corners of the universe with Ellen Jackson and Nic Bishop as they follow Dr. Alex Fillippenko and his High-Z Supernova Search Team to Mauna Kea volcano in Hawaii. There they study space phenomena and look for supernovae, dying stars that explode with the power of billions of hydrogen bombs. Dr. Fillippenko looks for black holes—areas in space with such a strong gravitational pull that no matter or energy can escape from them—with his robotic telescope. And they study the effects of dark energy, the mysterious force that scientists believe is pushing the universe apart, causing its constant and accelerating expansion.

Ages 8 to 12 Grades 4 to 6 AUTHOR: Ellen Jackson is the author of Looking for Life in the Universe, as well as many other books for young readers. Nic Bishop, who holds a doctorate in the biological sciences, is the photographer of many acclaimed books for children.
A science book that looks deeply at space phenomena such as black holes, dark energy, supernovae, universe expansion, and lots more.
ELLEN JACKSON was born and raised in southern California. As a teenager, she always wished her feet were small and delicate, and tried to cram them into shoes that were several sizes too small. Later, when she read the story of Cinderella to her kindergarten classes, she wondered how anyone could run in glass slippers, much less dance in them. Now the author of several books for children, Ellen lives in Santa Barbara, California, where she has gladly forgotten the recipes for dozens of ways to make tuna casserole.
