USAT DORCHESTER Memorial troop ship memorial first day cover with a postmark from
Liberty, MO on June 15, 2020. Black and green stamp design cachet
#3273 of the sinking of this ill-fated ship by Alvin Eckert USCS #9964. The ship
was sunk by enemy submarine U-223 on Feb 3, 1943 while she was part of a convoy
heading for a base on Greenland. The Four Chaplains aboard shared their life vests
with passengers and then went down with the vessel into the frigid water. The art work
on the stamp design is quite excellent and portrays the danger and heroism shown
on North Atlantic convoy voyages. Cover prepared on a 55 cent flag stamped envelope # U-700 (FDOI)
and the 3 cent Four Chaplains stamp # 956. The enemy submarine was later destroyed by Allied ships.
Seller also has a Greenland map cover for the tragic USAT Dorchester WW II sinking.
