The 8th Special Operations Squadron (SOS) played a significant role in the Vietnam War, primarily conducting psychological warfare operations. The squadron was activated in 1968 and assigned to the 14th Special Operations Wing, flying a variety of aircraft including the Douglas A-1 Skyraider and the Cessna O-2 Skymaster.

The 8th SOS conducted a wide range of missions during the Vietnam War, including leaflet drops, loudspeaker broadcasts, and other psychological operations aimed at influencing enemy forces and the local population. These operations were designed to degrade enemy morale, gather intelligence, and support overall U.S. objectives in Vietnam.

In addition to its psychological warfare missions, the 8th SOS also provided close air support to U.S. and allied ground forces, using its aircraft to strike enemy targets and provide reconnaissance and surveillance support.

The squadron's efforts were recognized with several awards, including the Presidential Unit Citation and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Combat "V" Device. The 8th SOS continued to serve in Southeast Asia until the end of the Vietnam War in 1973, after which it was inactivated.
