An ironic issue seeing as the republic had been dead for nearly 400 years at this point. This really highlights how important their republican legacy was to the Romans, even if everyone knew it was just imperial propaganda. Issued by the western emperor, Valentinian I for Valens, the eastern emperor. This demonstrates the firmly held Roman ideal of one united political dominion with multiple imperial heads of state (duality of executive power has a long history in the Roman state).

This is the bargain bin. You may find it hard to believe, but my first Roman coin looked much worse than this. And it still inspired me to explore ancient numismatics as a serious hobby, bringing me plenty of joy along the way. Maybe this coin can be that for you or someone you know. A genuine, ancient Roman coin for less than $10!
