Port Arthur: Unravelling The Truth

A NINETEENTH CENTURY convict penal settlement, some of the buildings now lie in ruins; others meticulously maintained, all set in beautiful, lawned gardens. This site has been a tourist attraction for more than a hundred years. When the Port Arthur penal settlement closed, some wings were repurposed for private accommodations for visitors. Convicts who remained behind became guides, passing on their knowledge of the site, sometimes with a touch of dramatic embellishment.

This production has been made possible with the assistance of the Historic Site's academic researchers and archaeologists. OVER THE YEARS, many myths and legends have evolved and proved remarkably persistent at Tasmania's Port Arthur Historic Site.
