This sale is for a vintage hardback edition entitled “Mr. Midshipman Easy,” by Captain (Frederick) Marryat (1792-1848), illustrated with 8 COLOUR plates, including a frontispiece, numerous other illustrations by Leonard Huskinson and COLOUR illustrated endpapers.

It was published by The Heirloom Library, of London, in 1954 first printing in the The Heirloom Library series of illustrated books for children.

This novel is set during the Napoleonic Wars, in which Marryat himself served with distinction in the Royal Navy.

Mr Midshipman Easy is one of the most popular of Captain Frederick Marryat’s sixteen novels.  Many of his stories, including Mr Midshipman Easy, were sea yarns.  Midshipman, however, is the story of Jack Easy, who has learnt from his father (a wealthy old man) that all men are created equal and should be treated as such.

The novel deals with the difficulty of such a belief system within the inevitable and crucial hierarchy of a sailing vessel. The ship is crewed by a cast of humorous and interesting characters. Mr Pottyfar is a lieutenant who manages to kill himself using his own supposed ‘universal medicine’ while other fellows of interest include the truculent chaplain, Biggs, and Jack’s Ashanti friend Mesty.  Jack finds himself part of numerous adventures on board ship and these intrigues are the main thrust of the novel.

The book measures 8.3 inches x 6 inches and has 256 pages + colour plates.

The book is in good, neat condition for its age, with wear/scuffs/bumps and is a little grubby/faded to the original decorative hardback cover, with a little foxing/staining near the covers/rims. There are NO inscriptions/book-plates and NO other ink or pencil markings in the book. The binding is good with no loose or missing pages.  There is no dust-jacket.

A wonderfully illustrated vintage edition.
