The Road of Bones: a great journey through IQ’s new soundscapes

With their 11th studio album IQ once more
prove that they belong to the leading bands in the progressive rock scene. Since
“Frequency“ the line-up has changed on 3 positions: new on keyboards is Neil
Durant (Sphere³), back again are the former band members Tim
Esau and Paul Cook. The album was magnificently produced by the guitarist Mike
Holmes and Rob Aubrey was sound engineer for the brilliant recording
quality.
Musically the band convinces with excellent instrumentation and an outstanding Peter Nicholls on vocals. Partly the band returns to its musical roots, especially on “Until the End“, but also incorporates new sound elements and effects. “The Road of Bones“ is more keyboard orientated than previous albums and I must especially compliment Neil Durant on his magnificent keyboard work.
The new work features complex song structures with many epic passages and partly is very emotional and melancholic. There are many mood and tempo changes, from soft and sensitive to rocky and heavy, from acoustic up to bombastic passages.

Road of Bones: eine großartige Reise durch IQs neue Sound-Landschaften

Mit ihrem 11. Studioalbum bestätigen IQ ein weiteres Mal, dass sie zu
den führenden Bands der progressiven Rockszene gehören. Gegenüber “Frequency“
hat sich die Besetzung auf 3 Positionen geändert: neu an den Keyboards ist Neil
Durant (Sphere³), wieder
dabei sind die früheren Bandmitglieder Tim Esau und Paul Cook. Das Album wurde
vom Gitarristen Mike Holmes hervorragend produziert und Rob Aubrey sorgte für
die brilliante Aufnahmequalität.
Musikalisch überzeugt die Band mit einer exzellenten Instrumentierung und einem überragenden Peter Nicholls als Sänger. Teilweise knüpft die Band an ihre musikalischen Wurzeln an, besonders auf “Until the End“, bringt aber auch neue Soundelemente und -effekte in ihre Musik ein. “The Road of Bones“ ist keyboardorientierter als frühere Alben und Neil Durant muss man für seine starke Keyboardarbeit ein besonderes Lob machen.
Das neue Werk weist komplexe Songstrukturen mit vielen epischen Anteilen auf und ist teilweise sehr emotional und melancholisch. Es gibt viele Stimmungs- und Tempowechsel, von sanft und einfühlsam bis zu rockig und heavy, von akkustischen Teilen bis zu bombastischen Passagen.
