Description:

A vintage Celluloid bookmark / page marker decorated with the flags of the United Kingdom and France which have been hand painted and the words "La Belle Alliance" (referring to the inn of the same name near to where the Duke of Wellington and Prince Blucher met after the Battle of Waterloo).

Celluloid was a predecessor of plastic and was invented in the late 19th century. Two similar products were developed around the same time, one in England and one in the USA. Celluloid was  popular as an ivory substitute, there was a shortage of ivory due to overhunting and Celluloid was an attractive, versatile (it could be moulded) and light alternative.
