Stan Cohen was born and raised in Charleston, West Virginia and is a geology graduate of West Virginia University. After working in the oil fields in his native state he moved to Missoula, Montana in 1961 to work for the US Forest Service. In the summers of 1962 and 1963 he worked for the service in southeast Alaska and the Kenai Peninsula. In 1963 he entered into a ski business in Missoula at the local ski area and between that and a downtown ski shop, spent 11 years in the business. He founded Pictorial Histories Publishing Company in 1976 and since 1980 has been a full-time writer and publisher, authoring or coauthoring 72 books and publishing about 350. And for 15 years had his own geology consulting business in Missoula. He has traveled extensively in Alaska and the Yukon. He has been to the Aleutians and Priblof islands five times and has written fifteen photo history books on Alaska and the Yukon, including four volumes of the Forgotten War series. In 2008 he was awarded the Contributing to Alaska History award. He lives, writes, and publishes from his home in Missoula with his wife, Anne.
