Description

"Miniature Motor Car Racing Tests Drivers Skill”. A look back at the Miniature Speedway, a precursor to modern slot cars.

The following info is not mentioned in the article, but according to our research:
  • Grandpa Sez; In late 1931, or early 1932, Tim Birkin (Sir Henry Ralph Stanley Birkin) entered into a partnership with businessman and fellow race car driver, Mike Couper, called Birkin & Couper Ltd.  The company entered into the manufacture of a miniature electric model raceway with motorized cars running on single rails. In March 1933 the workshop at Broadwater Road, Welwyn Garden City, was put up for sale.
  • In May of 1933 while racing at the Tripoli Grand Prix, Birkin burnt his arm badly against the hot exhaust pipe while reaching into the cockpit for his cigarette lighter during a pit stop. There are different opinions of what then happened. The traditional view is that the wound turned septic, whilst others say Birkin suffered from a malaria attack. It was probably a combination of both that proved fatal, as Birkin died at Countess Carnavon Nursing Home in London 22 June 1933.
