This extraordinary patinated copper alloy fruit shaped case/box in the form of a plum or quince or similar, measures 4 1/4" x 2 1/2" x 2 1/4" and the top stem unthreads to allow the hinged halves to open.  The interior is compartmented as shown with a lift out tray/box with further specific fittings.  The inside features a most unusual "random" scrtached/abraded decoration that is fire gilded and sparkles when the box opens.  I am uncertain as to the original function: cosmetic case was suggested and even betel nut case, though that never reached the prvalence i n Japan it has enjoyed elsewhere.  It is finely crafted, with worn gilding and spots of verdigris inside.  The well-made, sturdy hinge functions well and the threaded "stem" latch is quite secure.  There are no dents.
