The Antique Porcelain Company was founded by one of the legendary collectors and dealers in ceramics of the 20th century. Hanns Weinberg (1900-1976) fled Germany in 1938 and opened his London galleries 1946, rapidly establishing a reputation for the superb quality of both his wares and his clientele, who included the Queen Mother, Queen Mary, Princess Margaret, the Duke of Windsor, and the Kings of Sweden and Italy. In 1957 he opened a second establishment in New York, filling a 5-floor townhouse on 57th street with his remarkable offerings. Sotheby’s auctioned Weinberg’s personal collection in May, 2005, and the catalog noted that he was, "an icon in the porcelain world (who) helped to ensure the spread and continuation of a rich cultural tradition of collecting and connoisseurship way beyond its original borders and time. His unerring eye, and his determination to acquire the very best, led his clients to form some of the most important post-war collections of decorative arts." The Antique Porcelain Company’s catalogs were carefully prepared and photographed and elegantly presented, as befitted the rare specimens illustrated in them. As the Sotheby’s catalog notes, “Mr. Weinberg is remembered for his distinctive bravado and bold bidding tactics in the salesroom. Sitting in the front row, he sought out and pursued quality, and he was prepared to bid far above estimates if he felt it were worthwhile”. As his catalogs show, it almost always was...
