Volusian | AR Antoninianus

Reference: RIC IV 206
Date: 252 CE
Obverse: IMP C C VIB VOLVSIANVS AVG; bust, radiate, draped, cuirassed, right
Reverse: VIRTVS AVGG: Virtus, helmeted, wearing military attire, standing right, leaning on shield, holding spear in right hand
Mint: Mediolanum (Milan)
Size: 24.2 mm
Weight: 4.97 grams

According to the great Roman numismatist, Harold Mattingly, this coin is an example of a "special emission" from the mint at Mediolanum, which he argued existed to complement the major Italian mint at Rome. This emission included a number of types including VIRTVS AVGG and the curious IVNONI MARTIALI. Struck on a broad and heavy flan. Some roughness but overall a very nice antoninianus.
