Authentic original U.S. Post Office Jacket Badge. Inscribed with "C J Hellers" and 1888 Patent Date.Numbered badges to be worn on the hat, cap, or helmet were first prescribed for letter carriers in the 1887 Postal Laws and Regulations. The Heller Patent Badge with a patent date of April 10, 1888, shows up in photographs of letter carriers in The Postal Record as early as 1891.This badge was assigned to a postal worker in New York early 1900s. He retired in 1944. This item has not been cleaned or repaired in any way but has lost the hoops for the straight pin looks to have been chiseled down.
