Como toda pieza antigua, esta pieza puede presentar desgaste, porosidad moderada y/o coloración, rayazos y cantacitos, inevitablemente normal en este tipo de material monetario circulante antiguo, cuyo uso fué prohibido durante el régimen colonial Norteamericano en Puerto Rico luego de 1902.  Aunque estas piezas a veces provienen de descendientes de los dueños originales, o de excavaciones subsiguientes en la era moderna, la gran mayoría ya proviene de compra venta de antiguedades, o algún coleccionista dealer, o herencias de alguien que muere. Posiblemente  manufacturada en Europa, o los Estados Unidos, como la gran mayoría de los riles de hacienda de gran detalle. Totalmente original de época, garantizado.

For your consideration, one (1) classic Puerto Rico token or tool tag used during the Spanish colonial era, up to the early United States Occupation, either Coffee Plantation or a Merchant trade token, depending on the title, photos, and description above. This item is guaranteed genuine. Please make your own assessment in regards to the condition of the piece being sold here before bidding or posting your offer. 

In the case of both "riles" (Plantation Hacienda tokens), as well as the Merchant tokens, because of the circulating nature of most of these pieces which were deemed same as cash on the island during Spanish colonial era, until deemed illegal by the United States colonial government on 1902, and will show signs to have circulated, with porosity, stain, small nicks & scratches, but totally readable, with neater pieces commanding 20%-30% values over catalog pricing, rarer pieces even more. In the case of Tool Tags, because the Commonwealth Government took over the operation of over 25 sugar factories in the late 1960's - 1970s, it ordered the destruction of all worker tags, many being simply dumped into landfills, or buried deep on the factory premises, often times covered by a concrete parking lot, making them virtually lost forever, impossibly expensive to get hold of today.

 It is guaranteed original of that era. Provenance of some of these pieces are from descendants of owners, but the majority come from trades and swaps with antiquarians and dealers, as well as coin collectors, while some pieces get sold by relatives of deceased collectors. We always commit to keep provenance private, unless otherwise noted, as some family members will refuse to provide these pieces to our sources if their names become known, as often times, some relatives refuse to sell what they deem a family heritage to the public.

WHAT IS AN ALMUD?
On plantation tokens, normally coffee plantations an almud is an Arab - Spanish name for a unit of weight (usually 1 bucket full) which used to be measured in Kilos, the European way. On modern times they would have corresponded to 24 pounds of ripe red coffee tree berries or 7 pounds of roasted ground coffee; a novice picker would pick about 4-5 buckets, good picker would do about 7-9 buckets, experts would pick even more.

WHAT IS A REAL?
Mostly on merchant tokens, but sometimes on plantation tokens as well, 1 Peso equaled to 8 reales of 12.5 cents each: for example: 1/8 of Real (an Octavo) which was locally called an "Ochavo" or simply "chavo" 1/4 real = 3.25 cents, 1/2 real = 6.5 cents, 1 real = 12.5 cents, 2 reales = 25 cents, 4 reales = 50 cents, 6 reales = 75 cents, 8 reales = 1 Peso, and so on. In 1869 the Spanish coinage became decimal with the arrival of the peseta, with 5 Pesetas equal to 1 Peso (0.20c of a $1), following the European economic union agreement (where most "Continental European" (UK never entered this union) had all coinage made same size, same silver / copper content, equal value, etc, like 5 Mark = 1 Thaler, or 5 Lira = 1 Talero, or 5 Franc = 1 Gourde, etc) but on most of the Spanish Caribbean the coinage kept being named reales. In Puerto Rico even today, locals still call the cent a "chavo" , the quarter a "peseta" (although now 25c) and a dollar a "peso".

Each item is sent either in a 2"x2" coin flip, a coin capsule, plastic wrap, foam layered insert, top loader card protector, bank note plastic jacket, first day cover plastic jacket, or another protecting method, and sent well padded within thick card board and/or bubble wrap in an envelope or mailer box, wrapped in hard plastic tape on all 4 sides, with your address on two sides.
