    PRODUST DETAILS

The history of mail and postage stamps of France, a state in the west of Europe, covers the early (pre-stamp), classical (stamps of the 19th - early 20th centuries) and modern periods. Since 1849, France has been issuing its own postage stamps, and since 1876 it has been a member of the Universal Postal Union (UPU). Postal operations in the country are carried out by La Poste.

    Early (pre-mart) stage

On June 19, 1464, the first postal service was established by decree of the French king Louis XI, which delivered correspondence only for the king and the royal court. The first international couriers were provided by the Count of Thurn y Taxis in 1490[6].

With the gradual development of the postal system, in 1576 a fee was established for sending a letter by state mail, this was the first fee of its kind for a postal item not directly connected with the royal court.

By order of Guillaume Fouquet de la Varanne[en], the delivery times of the mail became more precise, and it became available for public use in 1603. The first general postal rate was introduced by a decree of the chief postmaster, Pierre d'Almera (Fr. Pierre d'Alméras) on October 16, 1627, approved by a royal patent for the forwarding of letters on May 12, 1628. The first postal routes were routes from Paris to Dijon or Macon (2 sous), Lyon, Bordeaux or Toulouse (3 sous).

The postal network expanded considerably and in April 1644 the tariffs were changed. The 2 sous tariff was abolished, but there were already 41 settlements on the list, mail delivery rates to which ranged from 3 to 5 sous. In May 1644, tariffs for the delivery of mail abroad were introduced: to England - 10 sous, to other neighboring countries - from 9 to 16 sous. Postal notes on letters were made by hand[6].

In 1653 J.-J. Renoir de Vilayet founded the Petite Poste [de] in Paris and installed the first mailboxes.

The Marquis de Louvois, who was Superintendent of Posts until 1668, began reforming the kingdom's postal service. In 1673, tariffs were brought into direct proportion to the distances carried by mail. Four zones were formed: less than 25 leagues, 25-60 leagues, 60-80 leagues and more than 80 leagues. Rates for the delivery of one letter varied from 2 to 5 sous.

A new revision of postal rates took place in 1676, taking into account the use of the envelope. Unlike neighboring England, where the letter was considered to be a folded sheet of paper and the envelope was the second sheet of paper, doubling the rate, the French postal service charged a fee of only 1 sous per envelope. This decision caused a rapid growth in the production of envelopes in the country, while in England such an industry took shape only in the 1820s.
