A Mid-Century print by the British born artist Colin Paynton, framed

Nice big original retro frame

Great condition

92cm wide x 72cm tall

Large retro commercial print on board by British artist Colin Paynton. The print is framed but not glazed. This classic image from the late 60’s early 70’s shows Cervantes fictional character Don Quixote with his faithful companion Sancho Panza. The print has been commercially produced from an original painting. The figures are painted in blacks, greys over a striped weathered surface. Perfect for a Seventies themed interior.

Born in Bedford in 1946, Colin Paynton finished his schooling and went on to study at the Northampton College of Art from 1963-1965.

Shortly after leaving art college he joined up with Colin Ruffell and Richard Akerman and ‘Spectrum Studios’ was founded. They specialised in selling their paintings door to door.

Sometime later, and before it became a commercial street market, Colin Paynton also sold his paintings at Bayswater Road on weekends.

The fledgling Athena Print Company produced many prints by Colin Paynton with great success, but it was ‘Don Quixote’ and ‘The Haywagon’ published by Felix Rosenstiels Widow and Son that were perhaps the two best known examples of these reproduction prints. Paintings were also produced for sale by G-Plan during this time who exhibited them in room settings within large department stores.

The print and frame are in very good condition, the colours have faded slightly, please see pictures.

Measures approx. 92cm wide x 72cm tall, framed but not glazed.
