This sale is for a
vintage hardback edition entitled “The
Flower of Gloster,” by E. Temple
Thurston, with an Introduction by L. T. C. Rolt, illustrated with 8 pages
of new photographic plates and numerous other illustrations in the text.
It was published
by David & Charles, of Newton Abbot, in 1972 (the FIRST EDITION was
published in 1911 by Williams and Norgate, of London).
A superbly written and charming pre-First
World War narrowboat/canal book by Ernest Temple Thurston (1879-1933) who was
a prolific author of novels and plays, from which over 20 motion pictures and
theatrical plays were made.
L. T. C. Rolt,
known as Tom Rolt (1910–1974) was a prolific author on engineering
subjects, industrial history, heritage railways, and canal/narrow
boat/waterways books.
A classic in canal
literature, the author tells the story of a leisurly voyage in a narrow boat
with Eynsham Harry the boatman and Fanny the horse, up the Oxford Canal, along
the Warwick line, and down the Stratford-upon Avon: then by Avon and Severn to
the Thames and Severn Canal and so to the Thames again.
The book measures 8.75
inches x 5.75 inches and has 244 pages + photographic plates.
The book is in
good, neat and clean condition for its age, with a similarly very good original
dust-jacket (price-clipped). There are NO inscriptions/book-plates and NO other
ink or pencil markings in the book. The
binding is good with no loose or missing pages.
A wonderfully
illustrated vintage edition.
