Doctor Walker was born November 26 1832 in Oswego, NY and was a graduate of the Syracuse Medical College NY (class of 1855). She is recognized as an early woman in US medicine. She married, divorced and was in private practice before volunteering as a surgeon in the Civil War for the US Army. She was awarded the Medal of Honor for her services during the Battle of First Bull Run. Later, she was captured by the Confederates in April 1864, and exchanged for a CSA doctor in August 1964. Dr. Walker wore men's clothing and was a woman's suffrage activist after the war. She was mainly tasked to amputate wounded soldier's limbs during the violence of the conflict. She died in 1919 one year before a woman's right to vote was approved.
