U-505 German Submarine WW2 The Story of 1955 Chicago Museum S&I Program Guide TJ3

The United States owes much to the sea. It car-
ried our ancestors to freedom and a new way of life on a virgin continent. When our nation was new and weak, the sea was the bulwark that protected us from stronger nations, jealous of our democracy's growth. As we became stronger, our industry thrived and grew because the sea gave us access to the markets and resources of the entire world.
In both World Wars, after bloody battles against submarines, the sea was the highway over which we deployed our military might to fight the wars a long way from our home shores. Now that we are the world's greatest nation, we are utterly dependent upon the sea's highways to bring in strategic raw materials that keep the wheels of our mighty industry turning.
