K'rok West is a mod, or modified human, whose gene-father was a famous naval commander in the Silence Wars. Born two hundred years after the faster-than-light pluralis drive was discovered, West was created as a weapon in the warfighting lab of a shadowy deceptive race. Stolen as a baby, and raised as an outcast, West searches for his place in the galaxy. He winds up in the Marines, the huge, augmented cyborgs that protect the Systems from the wildly diverse, and dangerous posthuman colonies spread throughout the Orion-Cygnus arm. Pursued by his creators and manipulated by godlike, silicon, descendents of man, West is destined to live a life engaged in conflict.
Jake Enholm enlisted in the Marine Corps at the tender age of eighteen and immediately won all kinds of awards and accolades, was promoted incredibly quickly up the ranks, and retired with thousands of adoring fans after twenty-two years. Not really. Jake Enholm clawed and fought his way up the chain of command from private to major, through wars and bureaucracy, and was lucky to escape with his life. OK, not exactly that, but not far off. He enlisted in the Marine Corps, went to boot camp in San Diego, and eventually became a KC-130 enlisted navigator, a species of Marine which is almost extinct. Seeing the writing on the wall and the computers appearing in the cockpit, he went into an officer commissioning program, and got a degree in physics from the University of Arizona on the way. Enholm wound up as an armor platoon commander in Camp Lejeune. For some strange reason, he quickly grew tired of traipsing through a swamp, looking for lost equipment, and went to the Naval Postgraduate School. After graduate school he wound up traipsing through a swamp of logistics data, looking for lost equipment. Not to be deterred, he retired. Now, he lives with his wife, two dogs, and two cybernetically modified African Spurred Tortoises in Phoenix, Arizona. He enjoys reading, drinking single malt Scotch, and tinkering with things that shouldn't be taken apart.
