The city sees a surge of disappearances and an eclectic collection of New Yorkers trying to stop the dangerous mutation in the sewers that seems to be the reason.

Although CHUD (Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers) received a mixed reaction from critics when it was released, it has since become an enduring pop culture mainstay and cult hit. The scene in the James Cameron film Aliens when the marines are massacred on camera and monitored from a safe location was clearly inspired by a very similar scene when the mutant cannibals attack armed investigators underground on camera. In the years since it was released CHUD has been referenced and parodied in THE SIMPSONS, SOUTH PARK, CLERKS II, CLERKS III, DONNIE DARKO, FUTURAMA, ARCHER, SPONGE BOB SQUAREPANTS, ROBOT CHICKEN, RICK AND MORTY, STAN AGAINST EVIL, CASTLE, MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000, CW’s THE FLASH, AQUA TEEN HUNGER FORCE, the video games BLADE RUNNER, TONY HAWK’s UNDERGROUND, FAR CRY 3: BLOOD DRAGON, MORTAL KOMBAT 11…to name just a handful! It also spawned a sequel and talks of a remake for years.

Part of the lasting appeal is the fact the cast was not a bunch of amateurs who never acted again, but instead was populated with an impressive of seasoned stage and screen character actors on their way to long careers in supporting and leading roles.
