Description

A look back at The Thorne Miniature Rooms exhibit in the Chicago Art Institute. It is the home to the world's largest collection of miniature rooms in the world, containing 68 individual rooms. All are completed in 1/12 scale and capture the most influential architectural designs of the past four centuries. Created by Chicago socialite Narcissa Niblack Thorne during the 1930's, the collection of 68 dollhouse-size interiors chronicles the history of design over seven centuries. Famed for the craftsmanship with which Mrs. Thorne‚ workmen executed her vision, the impeccably detailed rooms re-create archetypal styles of European and American residential design on a scale of one inch to one foot.

The rooms are outfitted in remarkable detail, with tiny upholstered furniture, staircases, chandeliers, mirrors, patterned wallpaper and carpets, stained glass windows, framed artwork, and ornate ceilings. This article about the opening of the gallery gives a bit of it's history and has photos of some of the replicas of 18th and 19th century Colonial American homes.
