Orpheus and Eurydice

This is an authentic 1892 engraving--NOT a recent reproduction

This is a high-quality, 1892 signed in the plate engraving (after a Ludwig Thiersch 1884 painting of a scene from the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice), engraved by A. Von Walla. Both artists' signatures are incorporated into the image (Thiersch's is on the bottom left; Von Walla's on the right).

This is a full-page plate produced to accompany the First American Edition of Character Sketches of Romance, Fiction and the Drama, by Rev. E. Cobham Brewer. It was printed at the Selmar Hess Publisher's Press, New York, 1892

The image depicts a scene from the Greek myth of Orpheus descending into Hades to bring back his wife, Eurydice. At the gates of Hades, Orpheus has turned to look back to be sure she is following: a direct contradiction of the conditions agreed upon for her release. As a consequence, Mercury catches Eurydice in his arms and carries her back to the Underworld. In anguish, Orpheus reaches out to them as they retreat.

This illustration is printed on heavy-weight paper, and is blank on the reverse. The sheet size is 11.5" by 9", and the printed portion measures 9" by 6 3/8".  The generous margins (1" to 1.25" all the way around) allow for convenient matting and framing.

The tissue guard that has protected this picture for the last century is included, as issued. The translucent tissue guard is printed with identifying details and a literary excerpt.

The varying weights of stroke and line widths afford this print an astonishing impression of texture and depth. It is a very emotive illustration and would look attractive matted and framed in an antique or contemporary setting.

The image below is cropped closely around the illustration, and does not include the full margins of the sheet:

Above: A cropped scan of the text printed on the thin, translucent tissue guard which protects the surface of the engraved print. The text above is NOT printed on the picture itself.
Condition: Excellent: As shown, with no tears or marks.

Print will be carefully packaged to preserve condition during shipping. Ships next business day.
